Happy Independence Day

It has been said that those who control the language control the future. I have been trying for years now to take back a little corner of the language, by wishing people a "Happy Independence Day", rather than "Happy Fourth", or "Happy Fourth of July". Especially when someone wishes me a "Happy Fourth", I make sure to respond with a "Happy Independence Day!"

Join me in bringing back meaning to the day - it is not just the fourth day of the seventh month people, it is our country's birthday!

Centrist??!?!

On the CNN Wire blog, one of the authors had the audacity to say that Obama was being centrist in his speech today:

the question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.

Pardon me?!?! It is not the government's job to find anyone a job, help them pay for health care, or pay for their retirement! Just because he throws in the bit about government being too big or too small does not make him a centrist, nor his ideas. He still thinks that the government should be taking care of our every need, and that is certainly not centrist...

SCOTUS says that it is not supposed to make laws!

Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment
is outmoded in a society where our standing army is
the pride of our Nation, where well-trained police forces
provide personal security, and where gun violence is a
serious problem. That is perhaps debatable, but what is
not debatable is that it is not the role of this Court to
pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.

The above is from the SCOTUS ruling on the Heller case that upheld the right of the people (called out in the ruling as separate and distinct from "a well regulated Militia") to keep and bear Arms. You have to love the smack down of the activist courts so prevalent in the country today. This is a good day.

New life for the laptop

We got a new laptop because the old one was dying - the final straw was that the power cord had a break in it somewhere, so you had to hold the cord just so or it would not charge.

I went at it this morning with a razor blade and 2 lbs of solder later, it works again! The patch is of course ugly, but it works - now what to do with this computer? I think I might try to install Ubuntu, but um, well, the CD player does not work ;). Of course half the memory slots don't work, the wireless card gave out years ago, and every once in a while you have to press the power on button repeatedly to get it to turn on, but it has a few month miles to go now!
