I know, eye of the beholder, I am not objective, etc, etc, blah blah blah; but tell me she is not at least one of the cutest babies that you have ever seen...

Not really sure the make of this car, but the burgundy paint was very rich in person.

New Tree, Old Tree, New Tree
Portola Redwoods State Park, California, USA
I was struck by the contrast of these two young samplings just starting out, ready to take the place of the fallen giant. The circle of life continues on...

The Fallen Tree
Portola Redwoods State Park, California, USA
These trees are so tall, but we have (or at least I do) a hard time quantizing just how tall they really are, but when we see them lying on the ground, it really is amazing. It is also very impressive how relatively small the roots are for such a tall tree.
The redwood trees are also amazingly fire resistant - brush fires will hollow out the part near the ground, but the rest of the tree continues on just fine.

Another picture from our short hike - the violence implied by the condition of the stump was too dramatic to not memorialize.

The Bridge
Portola Redwoods State Park, California, USA.
I am disappointed that this picture came out as fuzzy as it did - I really liked the framing of the bridge, and the curve of the pathway, but after hiking up the path, and then back down, my hands were just not to the task of holding still for the shutter speed required.
We had a really good time on this camping trip with our friends (new and old) from the Sunday school class that we used to attend for newly married couples. Ten years is fast approaching and we just don't fit the demographic any longer :)

Sunset over I-5
I-5, Sacramento, California, USA
I caught the tail end of this beautiful sunset over I-5 in Sacramento at the end of our weekend visiting my sister and brother-in-law. Two minutes early and it was much more dramatic and vibrant - beautiful sunsets only seem to last about 5 minutes for the really good parts.

Pink Flower
San Jose, California, USA
We needed to go out for a bit the other day, so we went for a "nature walk" by the creek trail near our house. It was also a good excuse for me to play with my new toy - a Nikon D50 DSLR camera. I have to say that I am very happy with how fast it focuses, takes a picture, etc. And the colors are much better - I can really tell the difference between the skin color of pictures that I have taken of Chanler, especially when flash is involved!

I know Linux is better, but...
Sometimes I just don't have the time for it.
I realize that some of the reason that it takes me so long to get anything setup in Linux is that I am not a Linux guru, but it is also just plain hard and time consuming sometimes, and I consider myself reasonably competent when it comes to working with *nix OSes ;)
Once a box is setup, it is great, will run forever, doesn't need in the way of maintanance other than to keep up with security patches, but that intial setup always seems to take forever, specifically when I want to do something in the laptop/desktop/user realm.
For example, I have a Linux print server that I setup, and I added a new printer to it the other night. Took me 5 minute to set it up on the Windows machine, took over an hour to setup on Linux. Find the RPM, oh wait, this is Ubuntu, that doesn't work. Find a version with src, try to compile, doesn't work with my version of cups (missing cups-config, I have cupsconfig, but that does not do it). Figure out how to make an RPM work on Ubuntu, install all the different things that are needed to make that work, and the install still does not work. Dig through what the RPM installed, find the .ppd file, unzip it, upload it through the web interface, now it works.
Network cards. I know, I should figure out ahead of time if the thing is supported, but when I am putting something together from a bunch of scavenged parts, that is not in the cards. I installed Fedora Core the other weekend, spent more or less the whole blankity blank weekend trying to get a PCMCIA network card, a USB network card, then a different USB network card, to work. It did not help that USB was not working out the box, and it took 3 hours or so to work through why that was not working.
At some point I gave up on that for a bit, and tried to get the sound card to work, and that would not work either...
Once I got those working, I was going to have to install and get working the UpNP music server, and that was likely going to be an adventure in itself, I am sure.
Again, freely willing to admit that a Linux guru could probably have had it up and going immediately, but I am not, but I am competent, and a pretty good Googler, so this stuff should not be impossible.
I finally gave up and installed Windows, and 1.5 hours later, I had sound working, I had network (with any of the 3 different NICs), I had the application humming along, ready to go, and WORKING!
Like I said, I really like Linux in the abstract, when it is already setup and configured, and as a server, but in my experience, using it for things in the user space that require things like wireless networking, sound, graphics, that sort of thing, I just always seem to strike out.
Please don't kill me for being critical of Linux, I really tried :(

1 Year Old!
Chanler turned one yesterday, it is amazing how time has flown, and yet at times crawled. I heard someone say that the days crawl, and the months fly by, and it has been very true for us. Chanler has grown so fast, so I thought I would post a picture taken just a few days after he was born, for old times sake.
I have not had time at all to take any pictures, and i got tired of having to dig through the archives to post pictures, so that is why I have not put anything up in a while. But then again, probably no one noticed ;)
Hopefully I will get out to take some pictures soon...

No people allowed
And certainly no Bozos!
I know what this sign is trying to say, but I tend to see things (signs, ads, commercials) in a slightly different light that makes their meaning open as to what they could be interpreted to say.
I saw this sign and was going to take a photo of it to share (along with my particular tweak on its meaning) before I even saw the No Bozos sticker. Not sure if someone else saw the same meaning, or if it was just a random sticker.

Oh so put upon...
My cousin Darren's dog Kisses was very interested in sniffing my camera, but was not so enthusiastic about the flash. I finally got her to hold still for a moment, just long enough for me to take the shot, sans flash, without too much blur.
I am posting this picture because it embodies how I am currently feeling. I picked up a nasty cold from Chanler (we are not sure where he got it from) that is driving me insane - I cannot stand not being able to breathe and having my eyes hurt and water all the time. I took a 12 hour decongestant, but that was over an hour ago and I am beginning to think that maybe the 12 hours is how long before it kicks in :( And since I don't like mixing my drugs, I feel compelled not to take NyQuill.
Now if only I could just feel a little bit worse, I might even feel justified in taking the day off from work...
